ORC International World Championship - Offshore Race completed

George Andreadis’s (GRE) GS 42R Meliti IV has extended their lead in the Class A standings of the ORC International World Championship by finishing yesterday’s two-part 82-mile offshore race in 2nd and 3rd place.
With the 1.5 weighted bonus points earned in these races, and combined with their 3 -1 performance in the inshore races on Tuesday, this puts them into a 16 point lead over Ricardo Di Bartolomeo’s (ITA) GS42R MAN in this 36-boat class.
Andreadis, a perennial champion in many classes and events, is hopeful his team’s performance continues for the two remaining days of racing.
“When we won in Key West Race Week, we had bow number 02, and that’s what we have here too,” he laughed. “But the boat is great and the team is sailing very well.”
Paolo Morville’s (ITA) First 45 ER Cavaliere Nero led Class A in the upwind race to Otranto by over 4 minutes in corrected time, and also won the reaching and beating race home by over a minute. This has vaulted them from 13th place in the standings to third, just 1 point behind MAN.
Meanwhile in the 41-boat Class B Giuseppe Giuffre’s (ITA) position as class leader on his M37 Low Noise has been replaced by Francesco Siculiana’s (ITA) GS 40RC Alvarosky on the strength of a 3-1 performance in both races. On the long beat to Otranto Fausto Pierbon’s (ITA) GS37B Sagola won the race by 1:34 in corrected time, while Alvarosky was only 8 seconds behind second-placed First Flight owned by the Carriero-Gazzabin-Valente-De Giorgo (ITA) syndicate. But on the return race Alvarosky managed the reach and wind shift to a light air beat very well, winning this race by a commanding 13 minutes over Sagola.
Inshore racing resumes tomorrow in Brindisi with 2 or 3 windward-leeward races planned, with Saturday scheduled as the final day of competition and the awards ceremony.
