Katusha wins the Match Racing! It could not have gone better for our first two days of racing in the RC44 Class.
We had a one race match against Puerto Calero in the semi final first thing today. The wind was light and the two boats were never more than 3 boat lengths apart.
Then we faced Organica in the finals, a best 2 out of 3. We won the first race wire to wire. Organica had a slightly better start in the second race and they went all the way left, while we went all the way right. Left was far better and it never was much of a contest. That set up the race for all the marbles. We led back in the prestart and slowed Organica down nicely.
Then we sheeted on and took the favored right side of the line and race course. It was a bit close up the first leg, but we were always in control. They then gybed away down the run and we just sailed the pressure and stretched nicely. That was pretty much it. The last lap was more of a delivery, which was just fine with the Katusha Team.
All happy here.
Tomorrow the fleet racing starts. All boats must have an amateur helmsman and we have a good one...Pieter Taselaar who just won the Melges 32 Worlds in Porto Cervo last week. The forecast for tomorrow is more of the same with the possibilty of showers.

A good day onboard Katusha today and it was our first race day. The 11 boats were split into two groups; six in our group and five in the other. We were 3-2 in the match racing and finished up second in our round. Organica of Poland was first with 4-1.
We were in a position to win each of our races and made one key mistake in each of the two that we lost.
As frustrating as that is, I would rather know that we have the ability to win and made a mistake than to not have the ability to win. In the other group, Puerto Calero won and No Way Back finished up second.
The surprise there is that Artemis and BMW Oracle are out of the top two, both finished up 2-2.
Tomorrow should put the top two teams of each division in a semi-final and then the final for the two winners.
Those who did not qualify will race for 5th-11th.
The winds were very light again today, with a peak wind speed of 8 knots at 15:00. But these RC44s are very high powered boats, so it was very good racing anyway.

The TP52 World Championship 2009 will be run by World Sailing Management (WSM) in cooperation with the RCNP and the TP52 Class from 6 to 11 October.

World Sailing Management is the co-owner together with Santa Monica Sports of the Audi MedCup. The organizers and the class manager expect an entry of 10 to 14 boats and see the stand alone World Championship as the perfect opportunity for potential TP52 owners or programmes to test their skills and to find out how it is to race a TP52 against many of the world’s best sailors.
The class manager will help those interested to charter a TP52 for this event in finding a competitive boat.
The regatta format follows the schedule typical of an Audi MedCup event with a practise race on Tuesday, a coastal race on Friday and a diet of windward-leeward races Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday to a total target of ten races.

I just learned today that Portoroz is one word.
Today was the official practice race. We went out early and did some match race practice with Artemis. The practice race was a fleet race and we finished a credible third. We had the lead off the start and <'s all of the way up the first beat then made some mistakes so the good news is that we can improve. The wind was 8-9 knots which is a good breeze in these boats. As you can see from the photo, we were fully powered up. Artemis won the practice race and Aqua was second, Ceeref fourth. In the photo you have, from front to back; Mo Gutenkunst, "Belt" Sander, Jarad "Beach" Henderson, Robbie "the Battler" Naismith, "Sister" Theresa, Marco "Shark" Constant and missing is Mohito and myself. I think I must have been down below making a sandwich at this time. No really, I was on the boat today. The dude on the back with the life jacket on is a photographer. Tomorrow we start the Match Racing part of the event. Our first match is against Sea Dubai, and then we have Aqua who is leading the season. First warning signal is at 1130.
The forecast is for light winds all week.

Congratulations to the very first Melges 32 World Champion, American Pieter Taselaar on USA-169 Bliksem with Jeremy Wilmot on tactics and crew of Nathan Wilmot, Williem Van Waay, George Peet, Paul Atikins, Michael Coxon and Alex Clegg. This amazing team has come a long way since the 2009 Miami Grand Prix, Audi Sailing Series Events in Scarlino and Cagliari, only to arrive in Porto Cervo and win the World Championship.
In second and third overall is Giovanni Maspero on ITA-999 Joe Fly and Armando Guilietti helming ITA-1 Uka Uka Racing for Lorenzo Santini tied with equal points. Originally leading the event, Claudio Recchi on ITA-93 Team 93 had a tough last couple days in the competitive arena leaving him in fourth overall.
Although disappointment ran deep last evening following a major protest from Taselaar against Claudio Recchi on ITA-93 Team 93, in which Taselaar won, there was still a heated battle for the second place overall position. Recchi, in second by one point over Guilietti, both went into the day's one and only race, putting spectators on the edge of their seats for the start. The light and shifty air tested the fleet, mixing up the rounding with Wolfgang Stoltz on GER-205 Opus One in first, Maspero, then Edoardo Lupi on ITA-487 Torpyone. Maspero dialed the race in to round the final mark in first, Stolz now in second and in third, Luigi Melegari on ITA-161 Matrix. Maspero blasted downwind for the win, Melegari took second and in third, Stolz.
The Bliksem team did not sail today. Instead they celebrated honors last night at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda that held a fabulously lavish buffet dinner and party in honor of the event.
Top Ten Results (After 10 Races)
1. Pieter Taselaar, Bliksem; 43
2. Giovanni Maspero, Joe Fly; 54
3. Armando Guilietti/Lorenzo Santini, Uka Uka Racing; 54
4. Claudio Recchi, Team 93; 55
5. Jason Carroll, Argo; 75
6. Vincenzo Onorato, Mascalzone Latino; 80
7. Francesco Martino, Pilot Italia; 81
8. Andrea Cecchetti, Bagua; 83
9. Joe Woods, Red; 84
10. Filippo Pacinotti, Brontolo; 85

We had a very good day of practice today on Katusha, our new Russian RC44. A lot of work has gone into getting the brand new boat ready for our first event here in Slovenia. Brad and JR have been here a month putting the keel on, getting the bottom perfect, assembling the rig and fine tuning all the bits and pieces. They have done a great job and we have a very nice boat to sail.
The Katusha crew is all new, so we have not sailed together before. These boats are really demanding from a crew stand point. The boats are very powerful and agile, so things happen fast. We have made great strides since our first day sailing together last Wednesday, but we have a ways to go to be as proficient at the teams that have sailed together for the past two seasons.
Tomorrow is the practice race. Since the practice race is a fleet race, we will do three or four practice match races with the Team Artemis beforehand. I know this is confusing, as I usually sail on Artemis. But that is the Artemis TP52 and this is the Artemis RC44, which has Dean Barker as helmsman.
The RC44 class allows four professional sailors and the remaining sailors must be non-professional. The owner or his representative, in any case an amateur, may helm the boat in the fleet racing. This has proven to be good for sailing in many other classes like Farr 40 and Melges 32. The pros, who are the tacticians in the fleet racing, helm the boats in the Match Racing. This is a lot of fun for us.
The format is that the first two days of the event are match racing and the last three days are fleet racing. There is placing for each discipline, as well as an overall combined placing.
The forecast for the next few days is for light winds.

Gitana Glory
The best breeze of the day filled in for the final three races today producing some extreme racing - close calls, collisions, penalties and a final double-points race decider - keeping the 10,000 strong crowd entertained on the IJ-Haven.
7 different race winners in this penultimate event that was more about tactics than boat handling.
Gitana Extreme sailed brilliantly under pressure to win the iShares Cup Amsterdam event ahead of Renaissance whilst whilst Groupama fought back win the final race and take 3rd. Overall series leaders, Oman Sail Masirah, put their day 1 disaster behind them, to finish 5th and retain their overall lead going into the final iShares Cup event in Almeria just 2 weeks away...

One of the worst kept secrets of the last few months is on the verge of being officially confirmed: Fiat are to sponsor an Italian Volvo Ocean Race campaign skippered by Giovanni Soldini.
Rumours have been doing the rounds since August, when Soldini was in negotiations to buy Torben Grael's victorious Ericsson 4 as a training boat. Word is that the sponsorship will fund the design and build of a new boat for the next race in 2011.
That will make it the first Italian campaign since Brooksfield in the 1993/4 Whitbread Race - unfortunately most often remembered for her rudder failure and near sinking in the Southern Ocean.
There's almost always an individual patron behind these deals and in this case I understand the connection is John Elkann, grandson of Gianni Agnelli, and heir to Fiat. Soldini sailed across the Atlantic with him on his grandfather's maxi Stealth and they have raced together on Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo.
It's pure speculation, but could the new Volvo boat eventually be a Guillaume Verdier design? Very possibly. Verdier designed Soldini's all-conquering Class 40 and the two have had a fruitful working relationship.

The Ericsson Racing Team released this statement today:
Kista, Stockholm:
Ericsson first entered the Volvo Ocean Race in April 2005, but now its journey has drawn to a close. The team's victory in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 is the perfect closing chapter to the company's involvement in the globe-girdling race. After having attained overall victory and great business-to-business success, Ericsson has decided not to participate in the 2011-12 edition.
The decision was not easy for Ericsson, since the race has served us extremely well and the feedback from our customers is great. But we achieved everything we hoped for and thus it is now natural to pause and seek out new opportunities.
Ericsson has built its global reputation on the core values of respect, professionalism and perseverance. The results achieved by Ericsson Racing Team both off shore and on shore truly reflect these values. There are many people, partners and colleagues around the world that contributed to our success, too many to mention here. Ericsson Racing Team is champion of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 due to their professionalism and dedication. To everyone involved we say thank you!

Islas Canarias Puerto Calero won today to clinch the Audi MedCup for the GP42 Series, whilst Emirates Team New Zealand won their fourth regatta on the trot and are Audi MedCup 2009 TP52 champions. Immaculate team work, consistently strong tactics and perfect reliability underpinned a comprehensive overall victory for Emirates Team New Zealand who lifted the 2009 Audi MedCup Circuit Trophy today in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain.
The young crew from the Canary Islands, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) won the title for the GP42 Series by winning the last race of the season
Lead by skipper Dean Barker (NZL), the New Zealand team won four of this season’s five regattas culminating in their dominant performance at this Caja Mediterraneo Region of Murcia regatta. With a second place today they won by 13 points over Portugal’s Bigamist 7, while Quantum Racing (USA), the outgoing champions, finished third in the regatta and secured the runners-up on the season standings 78 points behind the Kiwi team.
After missing out on victory in Alicante because of one error on the final run of the last race, Emirates Team New Zealand set about ensuring they improved at every successive regatta. In Murcia this week they were invincible in the big breeze, a class apart, and convincing in all other conditions. Of the six races which could be raced here they won six, completing a tally of 14 wins from 43 starts. The Kiwi team had no gear or sail failures through all five regattas, never had to re-start and only once took penalty turns, in Marseille.
The Audi MedCup Circuit returns in 2010 with the first event beginning on May 11th. The TP52 Class convene in Palma, Mallorca for the TP52 World Championships (6-11 Oct).
Next stop for the GP42’s will be in Lanzarote, Islas Canarias for their GP42 Global Cup over 13-17 October, where 10 teams are expected to compete.

TP52 - Audi MedCup - Cartagena
Paul Cayard
Thursday, September 17, 2009
Good day on Artemis today. We started the day in 4th place for the season and we are now in second.
It was a tough day out there with plenty of carnage. Fortunately we did not break anything and while our 7, 2 scores were not perfect, they were better than Quantum Racing and Matador.
With the wind reaching 32 knots and a very rough sea, Team New Zealand was in a class of their own winning both races. Audi Q8 had a good day scoring 2, 3 for second and Bribon had a 2, 6 for third. We are fourth.
Racing was stopped after the second race due to the damage that some of the boats incurred. Boats like Synergy and Matador broke 2 or 3 gennakers each! No collisions though.
Forecast for tomorrow is more of the same.

Two Strikes
Unfortunate situation....no racing again!

There was wind most of the day, but it was very unstable, both in velocity and direction. The wind "ratcheted" its way from 110 to 210 over 4 hours.
We had two attempted starts, but both were abandonned about 30 seconds to go due to 30 degree shifts.
Pretty frustrating for everyone.
We did something nice though. There was a RIB out there with about 8 opti kids in it watching us. We invited them on board and gave them all a chance to steer Artemis and get their photo taken. They were really cute, happy, smiling and enthusiastic. We even asked them which way we should go on the race course and they unanimously said "right". And they were correct.
Let's hope for sailable conditions tomorrow. The Coastal Race has been delayed at least to Friday and may even be cancelled to make time for more buoy racing.

As crazy as it sounded, what seemed an impossible feat is now the reference time to beat. With a time of 18 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes and 45 seconds, the total distance traveled on the little open catamaran was 3628 miles. IMPRESSIVE!!!

The Mayor of Nice, the World Sailing Team Association (WSTA) and Louis Vuitton are pleased to announce that the first Louis Vuitton World Series event will be held in Nice, France on the 7- 22 November 2009.
The WSTA and Louis Vuitton believe Nice is the ideal venue to launch the Series. Christian Estrosi the Mayor of Nice and President of Nice Côte d”Azur explains: “We are very proud to associate Nice with such prestigious names in the sailing world as Newport and Auckland whilst joining forces with Louis Vuitton to set up such a renowned sailing partnership. With the “Baie des Anges”, we offer an exceptional spot to an exceptional race“.
The Louis Vuitton World Series is an outgrowth of the successful and highly-competitive Louis Vuitton Pacific Series that took place in Auckland in February earlier this year. The launch of the LVWS is positive news for top-tier professional sailors as it guarantees a global world series aboard high-tech Version 5 ACC monohull racing boats. The series will feature a 10-team field competing in shared ACC yachts in a round robin, one-on-one match racing format where the two finalists go head-to-head to determine the winner. Points will be accumulated throughout the series to determine the ranking of the season.|
The second Louis Vuitton World Series event is scheduled for March 2010 in Auckland, New Zealand, followed by a Series in La Maddalena (Italy) in May 2010.
Organizers are also evaluating interest from other international cities to complete the racing calendar for 2010 and 2011.
Bruno Troublé, creator of the Louis Vuitton Cup and LVWS spokesperson comments: “We have received serious interest from cities like Athens, Greece; Valencia, Spain; Newport, RI, USA; Cape Town, South Africa; Hong Kong, and Abu Dhabi to host future events. “ The WSTA and Louis Vuitton will announce more events (2010/2011) during the Nice regatta this year.”
The Series, confirmed September 2, is attracting world-class professional teams as well international waterfront cities for hosting future events.
Teams confirmed for the first event in Nice include: BMW ORACLE Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), Italia by Joe Fly (ITA), K-Challenge (FRA), Mascalzone Latino (ITA), Swedish Challenge Artemis (SWE), Synergy Russian Sailing Team (RUS) and Team French Spirit (FRA) .
Pietro Beccari, Executive Vice President of Louis Vuitton, in charge of Marketing and Communication, notes: “We only announced the Series last week and already another four teams have expressed interest for the remaining two berths for Nice. We will soon confirm the remaining teams for the LVWS – Nice.”
K-Challenge, which has helped in establishing Nice as the Host City for the November event, will serve as Host Team in Nice. Stephane Kandler, K-Challenge's CEO: "The Louis Vuitton World Series is the result of hard teamwork between the WSTA teams and Louis Vuitton. We are very proud at K-Challenge to have played a key role in setting up the first event in France with the City of Nice where we will be the Host Team. We look forward making it a real success. This circuit is a new era for our sport."
All the LVWS events will be sanctioned by ISAF, the international sailing governing body and will take place over the next two years alongside the America’s Cup, but will not compete with the pinnacle of sailing. The format is cost-effective – teams don’t have to build boats – accessible, and turnkey for the participants.
Yves Carcelle, Louis Vuitton’s Chairman and CEO, is delighted with this new chapter, which complements but is separate from their 25 year association with the Cup: “In the wake of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, which brought a breath of fresh air to the sailing world, this Series will allow, once again, the teams to come together in a competitive but friendly atmosphere.”
Grant Dalton, CEO of ETNZ and a WSTA founding team explains: “The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was a great success. It seemed logical to try and build on this and that is what we have done. It is a win-win situation for Louis Vuitton, the teams and the host cities.”
Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing, a WSTA founding team, explains: “Sailing teams at the top of the sport require sponsorship. Sponsors require an annual global calendar of compelling events. And the sailors seek a highly-competitive series where they can face their toughest opponents on a fair playing field. We see this Series as addressing all of those elements and are excited by the potential.”

In one week's time Cartagena will host the climax to the 2009 Audi MedCup Circuit, and the conflict in the two different Series, the ten boats who will compete in the TP52 Series, and six for the GP42 Series, is likely to be very different.
Due to its strategic importance on the south east of the Iberian Peninsula as one of the best natural harbours in the western Mediterranean, and blessed with rich mineral deposits nearby, the historic city of Cartagena, Murcia – a home of the Spanish Navy – has seen more than its fair share of conflict. Between late in the 5th Century and the 13th Century Cartagena was seized by more than ten different powers.
For the dominant
Emirates Team New Zealand crew in the TP52 Series, their final regatta of the season, the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy regatta should be about sailing safe and smart to convert their overall lead of 52 points to overall series victory. Conventional logic suggests that, with three boats tussling over second, Matador (ARG), Quantum Racing (USA) and Artemis (SWE) and all within 5 points of each other, then perhaps Emirates Team New Zealand will have a clearer tilt at the title? Might they go on to extend their unprecedented three regatta wins in a row record, to four?
And in the GP42 Series, matters are incredibly balanced on a knife edge after 40 races. Both Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) and Roma Mk 2 (ITA) are locked on 82 points. It is simply: winner takes all.
For the 2007 Audi Med Cup Champions, owner-helm
Torbjorn Tornqvist (SWE) will be absent from the final event due to other commitments. His place on the helm will be taken by 2005 MedCup champion helm Vasco Vascotto (ITA) who will work with tactician Paul Cayard (USA) who has so far delivered a high degree of consistency for the Swedish flagged 2008-9 Judel-Vrolijk design. While they will be pushing hard for second overall, they are one of the five or six contenders who have proven well capable of winning an Audi MedCup TP52 Series regatta.
Racing starts with the practice race for the TP52 Series on Monday and the GP42 Series on Tuesday. The TP52s will face the last coastal race of the 2009 Circuit on Thursday. The final, end of season prize-giving takes place Saturday when the overall Audi MedCup champions will be crowned.

Tornado Worlds

Paris, September 2nd, 2009:
Some of the best professional sailing teams, grouped together under the name WSTA (World Sailing Team Association), and Louis Vuitton, a key player in the world of top-level sailing for more than 25 years, today announced the creation of an international regatta circuit.
The WSTA (World Sailing Team Association) groups together the participants in previous Louis Vuitton Cup regattas (K-Challenge (France), BMW Oracle Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand, Mascalzone Latino (Italy)) and welcomes newcomers such as Team Artemis (Sweden), Team Synergy (Russia), Joe Fly Italia (Italy) and Team French Spirit (France). Other teams will join the association in the coming weeks.
Entitled the Louis Vuitton World Series, these regattas are a first in the world of sailing and follow on from the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series organised in Auckland, New Zealand, last February. The global success of this exceptional competition persuaded all the partners in this adventure to create a dynamic and ambitious new race programme based on the same concept and format.
Ten teams will be invited to confront each other in successive duels over a fortnight on two pairs of identical boats chosen by lot. The racing boats were sailed in the 2007 LV Cup. This concept, which demonstrates the desire to return to the original spirit of "match racing", provides an exhilarating show and is easy for spectators to understand.
The WSTA and Louis Vuitton plan to organise several regattas a year. Many cities of which Nice, Hong Kong, Auckland, New York and several other European venues have shown their interest.
A press conference will be held in Paris on Tuesday, September 8th. More details about the first events to be organised in 2009 and 2010 will be disclosed during this conference.

Τελείωσαν τα ράλι, τελείωσαν οι διακοπές γυρίσαμε, σχεδόν, όλοι και ξανά προς τη δόξα τραβάμε.
