The outcome of RC 44 Championship Tour 2010 is more uncertain than ever, with five teams separated by six points after three events. Will the RC 44 Valencia Cup reshuffle the cards? The answer in a month.
The second half of the RC 44 Championship Tour 2010 will start in Valencia, Spain, on July 27. No less than eleven teams, including Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino and all the teams involved since the beginning of the season, will participate in the event.

The RC 44 Valencia Cup will be the fourth event of the Championship Tour 2010. It will most probably coincide with the return of summer sailing conditions following an interesting first three events this season. Indeed, the Tour started in February in Dubai in superb yet challenging conditions, with a lot of sand and dust in the air carried by a nearby storm; it carried on under the snow-capped mountains that surround the stunning Austrian Lake Traunsee, before last month’s strong breeze in Copenhagen.
The summer weather in Valencia should bring back the sun and the warmth, alongside the nice and stable sea breeze that traditionally blows in the Mediterranean during the summer.
The regatta will begin on Tuesday July 27 with a match race event held over two days. The team owners will then take the helm on Thursday 29th for a fleet race practice day followed by three days of fleet regattas.
Valencia, the iconic sailing venue, home of the America’s Cup 2007 and 2010, is a great site for sailing in general and the Championship Tour in particular. The races will take place in front of Malvarrosa beach (weather permitting) whilst one of them, on Saturday, will finish inside the Dársena, next to the famous Veles e Vents building.
RC 44 Championship Tour 2010, overall ranking after three events:
01. No Way Back 2, 2, 3 - 7
02. BMW ORACLE Racing 8, 1, 1 - 10
03. Aqua 4, 6, 2 - 12
04. Artemis 1, 8, 4 - 13
05. Sea Dubai 3, 4, 6 - 13
06. CEEREF 5, 7, 7 - 19
07. 17 11, 3, 5 - 19
08. Katusha 6, 5, 8 - 19
09. Islas Canarias Puerto Calero 7, 9, 10 - 26

PORTO CARRAS GRAND RESORT, 31/7-7/8/2010

The America's Cup debate has traditionally been one of the World Yacht Racing Forum's highlights. Last December's session saw the first – and only – public meeting between the then Defender Alinghi and Challenger of record BMW ORACLE Racing during their two and a half years of bitter rivalry.
The new Defender issued, last week, the long awaited draft Protocol for the 34th America's Cup. The team’s CEO Russell Coutts speaks exclusively to the World Yacht Racing Forum and answers some of the questions that many have been asking…
Russell Coutts, CEO and skipper of BMW ORACLE Racing: Copyright Guilain Grenier, BMW ORACLE Racing

World Yacht Racing Forum: What are the key changes you are introducing for the next America's Cup?
Russell Coutts: We are obviously working in a lot of different directions. I think by now everybody has understood that we want fair rules; one of our priorities is also massively improved media output, particularly on screens whether that's television or other devices. We are doing a lot of research on technology and formats, and will do some tests in July. For example, some people pretend that you can't do match race with multihulls, or that you need slow boats; this needs to be confirmed. It is very important for Larry and I to make sailing more TV friendly and understandable by a large public; otherwise the sport simply won't move forward.

World Yacht Racing Forum: How do you respond to those that are saying you are taking a long time to announce the format of the next Cup?
Russell Coutts: It is true. We are just trying to do things well and to take the right decisions: it's a heavy responsibility and a major task. The choice of the venue is obviously key, and a lot of things depend on it, including the boat. We also want to bring the costs down and need to be very careful with the decisions we take. The number of crew is one element: typically personnel accounts for 60 % of the budget of a campaign. Other elements include sensible restrictions on material and technology.

World Yacht Racing Forum: Will you develop a circuit of pre-regattas?
Russell Coutts: Yes, absolutely. This concept started in 1997 and was perpetuated in 2000 and 2007 with the Acts, which were good. We need to move up from this, particularly with regards to the logistics, which will play a huge role. We also need a format that really has a meaning. Our objective is to increase the value of the America's Cup for all teams and investors and we therefore need more events.

World Yacht Racing Forum: Do you have a target number of teams?
Russell Coutts: We clearly prefer eight top level teams to fifteen and half of them disappearing half way through. Considering the current state of the economy, eight teams is a realistic number. Our goal is to build commercial value for the teams and partners; if this leads to more strong teams in the future, then great!

World Yacht Racing Forum: How can you guarantee that the process for the next Cup will be democratic and that you won't have an edge over your competitors?
Russell Coutts: We have hired some people who are not part of our team or defence organization and are working on the rules for a new boat and the ‘on the water' race organization. We will announce the rules a long time ahead of the event and this will guarantee its fairness. We want the rules to be in place before people start joining, so that teams and partners know what they sign-up for. We have already circulated a draft Protocol to a small group of people and soon a bigger group will receive it. When the rules come out it will be clear to everyone that they are fair.

World Yacht Racing Forum: How do you concretely consult the other teams considering that the registrations are not open?
Russell Coutts: At this initial stage we consult people who have a lot of experience. Nobody is excluded; there's just a natural selection as we speak to teams and people who have already participated in the America's Cup. In the next two months we will identify potential new teams and speak to them. Basically what we want is to consult the event's stakeholders. Then we will take the decisions. We can't use a system of votes, because we need to consider all the aspects of the organization, TV, logistics etc…

World Yacht Racing Forum: Do you have a preference between monohulls and multihulls?
Russell Coutts: I honestly don't, and as a team we don't either; what we want is the best event.

World Yacht Racing Forum: There are many rumors concerning the venue. How open is the selection process and what are the criteria?
Russell Coutts: Well, San Francisco is an appealing venue to Larry as everyone knows. But the selection process remains open, and it is not restrained to the US. The first criteria will be the sailing conditions, as we want to create a great event. Delays kill the sport and we must avoid this. I must say that I am gratified to see how motivated the potential venues are: the interest is huge.

Victory in the first leg of the Farr 40 European circuit has gone to Massimo Mezzaroma’s Nerone (ITA) with tactician Vasco Vascotto.
Racing in the event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 25th to 27th June, did not take place today due to the lack of breeze off Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
Yesterday’s overall classification after three races is therefore valid for the series and Mezzaroma is followed in second place by Plenty (USA), owned by Alexander Roepers, with Barking Mad (USA), owned by Farr 40 class President Jim Richardson in third.
The Farr fleet will be back in Sardinia at the end of September for the second leg of the circuit, scheduled to be held in Porto Rotondo from 30th September to October 3rd.
The regatta was characterized by unusually light winds for the area but the fleet was able to dispute one race on Friday 25th and two yesterday in approximately 10 knots of northerly breeze. Back ashore the ten participating teams were treated to the customary YCCS social program, which included a welcome cocktail at the Clubhouse and refreshments in the Piazza Azzurra each day after racing.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s sporting calendar continues from tomorrow, 28th June, until 3rd July with the Audi Sardinia Cup, the ISAF Offshore Team World Championship.
Teams will be composed of a Farr 40 and a Melges 32 and many of the owners and crews competing in the Audi Invitational Melges 32 will remain in Porto Cervo for the championship.

Audi MedCup Circuit organizers, World Sailing Management, today introduced the Camper brand as official sponsor of the Conde de Godó Trophy - Barcelona, the third event of the 2010 season.
“We are very pleased to be working once again with the Audi MedCup Circuit, explains Estanislao Carpio, who is Executive Director of Operations for Camper, “ And we are especially happy to be involved with this edition in Barcelona, the city which has a long history with Camper and with which there is a particularly close relationship after having opened our first shop, the Casa Camper hotel, the Dos Palillos restaurant and many other projects in the famous City.”
“We at Camper hold a special and strong regard for the sport of sailing, we are tremendously international, but we are from Mallorca originally. The Audi MedCup Circuit is an event which shares many of our values." continues Carpio.

Kieler Woche - ISAF Sailing World Cup
The sun returned and racing finished for the ISAF Sailing World Cup classes today in the first part of Kieler Wo
che, the penultimate stage of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Competitors have had to endure some long days on the water at this years Kieler Woche, which began with blustery wind and waves producing some exciting sailing and then became a crawl to struggle through the schedule with very light and shifty conditions across all course areas.
The race committee had to work extremely hard to swap the courses and re-arrange the schedule, often finishing racing late in the evening. After five days of racing the medal races were a fitting finale for the 680 crews competing in the classes of the Olympic competition. 'When we saw the forecast this morning we were a bit afraid because it said that the wind will drop again during the day. But suddenly we had the breeze we were looking for and could organise fair races in all classes,' chairman of the Kieler Woche Jobst Richter explained.
The home nation, Germany shared the biggest medal haul with the USA, both with four medals but no golds. Great Britain and Australia came out on top, GBR with two golds and one silver and Australia with two golds and a bronze.
Men’s 470
The Australians Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page finished the job by winning the first of the gold medals at Kiel with a second place in the medal race.

Having already bagged four straight bullets they were virtually assured of the gold medal but the Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Sebastian Ostling sailed a good medal race to keep the Aussies concentrating and thus claimed the silver. The former world and European champions Sime Fantala and Igor Marenic of Croatia secured the bronze. The win means the Aussie team, who have sailed every ISAF Sailing World Cup this year, go into an unassailable lead in the ISAF Sailing World Cup standings to win in the 470 class. Dahlberg and Ostling (SWE) move into the second spot in the World Cup standings.
Women’s 470
The two British blondes Sarah Ayton and Saskia Clark capped off an excellent week claiming their first Sailing World Cup win in the 470 class. They finished the medal race with a fourth to secure the gold medal by four points from one of two Swedish crews in the top ten, Lisa Ericson and Astrid Gabrielson. The bronze medal goes to Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer of Denmark.

49er

The breeze had just lifted a shade in the early afternoon creating an exciting finale to the 49er regatta. The medal race went down to the wire, literally!

Whilst the Austrians Nico Delle Karth and Nikolous Resch won the medal race from German crew Lennart Briesenick-Pudenz and Morten Massmann, the race for third and the gold medal could not be decided by a photo finish for third, which meant the gold medal had to be decided on count back with the British pair of John Pink and Rick Peacock claiming it on a better number of third places, (both teams having the same number of first and second places).
Star
Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada of Brazil squeezed into the gold medal position with a seventh in the medal race, chased hard by the German crew of Johannes Babendererde and Timo Jacobs. The German crew finished second in the medal race and just short of the gold medal by a solitary point.

The American crew of Mark Mendelblatt and Magnus Liljedahl closed in on the bronze medal keeping the remaining German crews at bay. There were four German Stars in the medal race. Norwegians Elvind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen finished down in tenth place overall but maintain an unbeatable position at the top of the ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings in the Star class.
Finn
It was not the plan for Rafael Trujillo (ESP), he started as favourite going into the medal race but with a ninth in the medal race he lost his chance to beat his rival Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) and had to settle for bronze place on the podium. The young Croatian sailor Gaspic displayed his peak form again today after recently winning the European championship and the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik. Gaspic came in fourth in the medal race to snatch the victory from Olesksiy Borysov of the Ukraine. Trujillo still leads the World Cup standings in the Finn with Gaspic just behind with one regatta remaining.
Womens RS:X
A bitter end at Kieler Woche for Olga Maslivets (UKR) who led the whole fleet right from the start on Saturday but failed in the medal race with a ninth place, dropping her to fifth overall. With a second place in the medal race Agata Brygo (POL) catapulted on to the podium with Jessica Crisp of Australia taking the bronze. Blanca Manchon takes the lead in the Sailing World Cup standings having sailed all but one of the 2009-10 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas. Bryony Shaw (GBR) moves up to second in the standings.
Men’s RS:X
Julien Bontemps of France sailed a faultless regatta of eight races, scoring seven consecutive bullets! The silver medallist from Beijing 2008 won the medal race and as a result, the gold medal and the lead in the overall ISAF Sailing World Cup standings. On his tail all week was Ivan Pastor from Spain who finished fourth in the medal race securing silver at Kieler Woche and also becomes joint leader of the World Cup rankings in the RS:X class with Bontemps. Michal Majewski of Poland beat off his fellow Polish team mates to claim the bronze.
Laser
Double world champion Tom Slingsby of Australia only had to sail a conservative medal race to keep his closest rivals at bay to claim the gold in the Laser fleet. Clay Johnson (USA) had steadily improved throughout the regatta and raced a good medal race to jump onto the podium in silver medal position.

Johnson also jumps up into the top six in the ISAF Sailing World Cup standings in the Laser class in the process. Home nation sailor Phillipp Buhl of Germany has sailed a much improved regatta here in Kiel to grab a well deserved bronze medal.
Laser Radial
A second Kieler Woche win goes to Paige Railey (USA). From third place after the qualification rounds and lagging two points behind the leader, Paige Railey finished the medal race in fourth place, ahead of Franziska Goltz (GER) and Maiken Foght Schütt (DEN). Paige Railey steps up to the podium for the gold medal.

Second place in the medal race and silver on the podium goes to Franziska Goltz (GER) who was more then happy with her result: 'That was my best result ever and I trained very hard for it. Now I am looking forward to the world championship in September in Great Britain. But my main target is the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth.' Despite leading the regatta all week Tatiana Drozdovskaya (BLR) dropped off the podium finishing down in ninth spot in the medal race. Her only consolation is that she has gained enough world cup points to take the overall lead in the Laser Radial fleet with only the finale to come in Weymouth.
2.4 mR
There is no medal races in the 2.4 mR class but another two fleet races and it became a pursuit race for Heiko Kroeger (GER). Over the last five days of racing with fourteen races, he climbed from sixth place on Saturday to his fifth Kieler Woche win. 'This was very tough. I did not believe before this morning I could do it. I am very happy now to be again on the podium,' stated Heiko Kroeger (GER) who finished ahead Helena Lucas (GBR) and Thierry Schmitter (NED).

In a joint initiative by the defender, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club and the Challenger of Record, Italy’s Club Nautico di Roma, a draft of the Protocol rules for the 34th America’s Cup was sent to the challenging teams today.
Foremost amongst numerous innovations is a forward-thinking structure that allows funds and assets to transfer from one America’s Cup to the next. The draft is a ‘listening and living’ document. Teams have been invited to comment and, contribute to its final form. This follows an already unprecedented level of cooperation with the Challenger of Record and a dialogue with potential teams. It offers another chance for input before the Protocol is finalized and published by the of 31st August 2010 target. “This has been a painstaking process, but we believe it sets out a New Deal for the America’s Cup and fair play for all teams. It also incorporates the vision of the Cup held by Larry Ellison and BMW ORACLE Racing,” said Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing. “To create a fair playing field we plan to issue all of the event rules before the end of the year, and this is a significant first step in that direction,” Coutts said. “Teams will know exactly what they are signing-up to.”

Potential teams asked for these key elements to be included the 34th America’s Cup Protocol and they have been:

• neutral race management body
• wide-ranging powers for the Jury
• cost cutting measures
• initiative to transform television & media output
• added-value to sponsors & business partners
• sustainable, long-term business model

Building on the initiative by the World Sailing Team’s Association, a maximum of eight pre-regattas per year is planned for consistent racing and exposure for the teams in the years leading up to the America’s Cup. The Protocol will rein-in costs by reducing the number of racing crew, introducing nosailing periods and limiting the numbers of hulls, masts, appendages and sails teams can build. At the end of the 34th Match, the New Deal leaves an inheritance of substantial funding and assets to the next Defender in a move to end the stop-start cycle teams have faced previously. This sustainable legacy is dependent of the 35th America’s Cup defender continuing with neutral race management and a schedule of regular competition. In keeping with GGYC’s pledge of fair-play for all, among the many measures which will achieve this is a commitment that GGYC’s defender will not will not compete in the final Challenger Selection Series but that there will be defense trials if there is more than one viable US team. Television and media output have been prioritized in the draft Protocol to deliver more pictures, more audio and more data than ever before to audiences for an immersive experience, either through television or online broadcast. Progress on a new, exciting and physically-demanding class of America’s Cup yacht, again with a dialogue with stakeholders fundamental to the process, is moving strongly ahead.

Key dates (as announced at the joint Defender & Challenger of Record Press Conference on 6th May 2010):
• Protocol for the 34th America’s Cup will be issued by 31st August
• Design rule released by 30th September
• Race rules published by 30th December
• Challenge Period open from 1st October – 31st January 2011

Bermuda executive Mark Watson made his first race to Bermuda memorable with a corrected time win in Genuine Risk in the Open Division for cant-keel boats. Speedboat, owned by Alex Jackson, took line honors for the race, finishing just before dawn at 3:47:56 with an elapsed time of 59:17:56, well off the course record.
Ran, the Fastnet and Sydney Hobart race winner, finished first in Class 10 and is a strong contender for the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse trophy. Il Mostro (Puma) skippered by Ken Read, crossed the line second and corrected just behind Genuine Risk.
"We were ahead of Il Mostro and Speedboat after we all came out of the Gulf Stream west of the rhumb line," Watson said. "We decided to take a more easterly angle to avoid a cold eddy with negative current, but that let Speedboat separate from us."
Ran, Niklas Zennstrom's JV 72, is the provisional winner in Class 10 for big professional boats in the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division after being pushed hard by Tom Hill's Titan XV for more than 600 miles.
George David's Rambler matched up with Karl Kwok's Beau Geste and took line honors for these fixed-keel boats.
Vanquish, co-skippered by Bermudian Buddy Rego and Americans Russell Lucas and Jamie Hilton, crossed the line first in Class 8 for the big boats in the amateur St. David's Lighthouse Division, but Gus Carlson's Aurora is the provisional class winner.
Some smaller boats have a good shot at winning the division. Carina, skippered by Rives Potts, has a 60-mile lead over her Class 3 competition. In the highly competitive Class 1, Sinn Fein, Peter Rebovich's Cal 40 and the two-time defending St. David's winner, has sailed farther west than anybody and is fighting for the lead with David Dickerson's Lindy.
In the Double-Handed Division, iBoattrack showed Michael Hennessy's Dragon at the head of the pack, 160 miles from the finish, with the four-time winner Lora Ann not far behind.
The Cruising Division's leader, Clover III, was about 70 miles out on Saturday afternoon with a healthy lead on the 80-footer Nirvana.
All results are provisional until certified by the Race Committee on Friday.

The 2010 J/24 European Championship was won by Serco owned by Bob Turner flying a full Quantum® inventory.
In third place was Xenon, another Quantum®-equipped boat. The event was held in Roompot, Holland with 11 races held over four days.
On the first day, Serco won the first race and ended in third with Xenon having the overall lead.
On day two, Serco pulled up into second overall after a 2,2 scoreline and by the end of day three had the series lead with Xenon hanging onto second.
The final day was a real nail biter and was sailed in very light air. Serco extended its lead over Xenon with a third place in the first race of the day.
Assuming just one more race, Serco couldn’t be beaten; however the race officer had other plans and squeezed in an extra race in virtually no wind. Neither Serco nor Xenon made a very good job of it and after drifting over the finish line on nothing but the tide, it was unclear as to which boat had beaten the other.
What neither skipper realized was that Hellenic Police, the 2009 European Champ, had put itself right into the frame with a perfect 1,1,1. In the end, Serco was crowned 2010 European Champion by a single point and Xenon taking the final podium place just a couple of points behind.
Serco owner Bob Turner said, “Having come second in this event twice before, I am thrilled for myself and the team to have finally won it. The boat was fast upwind and down; the help and service I have received from Quantum has been a big help.”

Quantum Racing and Iberdrola’s green revolution overtook the Marseille Trophy regatta, the second event of the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit, as the two green-hulled Botin Carkeek designs lifted the respective top trophies for the TP52 series and GP42 series.
Quantum Racing’s (USA) victory in the TP52 Series fleet is their first event win overall since becoming 2008 TP52 World Champions in Puerto Calero, and their first Audi MedCup Circuit regatta triumph since they sealed the 2008 overall title winning the Portugal Trophy in September 2008.
The 2007 and 2008 GP42 Circuit title winners Iberdrola (ESP)
leave Marseille buoyed up for the rest of the season by their first ever Audi MedCup regatta win.
It was the Mistral which prevailed on the final day of scheduled rac
ing. Out on Marseille’s Rade race areas the notorious winds whipped spumes of spray and kicked up a nasty swell. With gusts close to 40 knots it always seemed unlikely that the Marseille Trophy fleet would leave the dock in the Vieux Port. For all that, the Quantum Racing team were never far from their boat and always poised to go and do whatever needed to be done.
Skipper-helm Terry Hutchinson (USA)
acknowledged the good work of his team, not least in the behind the scenes industry from their boat-builder, from Quantum Sails themselves and the designers Botin Carkeek, which have all contributed to the 2008 champions upping their game on last year. Winning two races and, for the second year in a row, the coastal race, formed the solid foundations for the Quantum Racing victory composed over just six races sailed.
Their win halts the Emirates Team New Zealand run at five successive regattas which they set off here in Marseille last year. The American crew finished 4.5 points clear of second placed Matador (ARG).
Keys to the Quantum Racing success have been consistently good starting, strong tactics and improved boat speed, whilst the reigning champions Emirates Team New Zealand will rue a high scoring opening day when they amassed 21 of their 31 points, finishing fourth overall, their worst finish ever on the Audi MedCup Circuit. But on the overall standings for the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit, the Kiwis’ 20 points lead which they came to France with has only been eroded by 1.5 points.
When it comes to consistency the Franco-German team on Audi A1 powered by All4One have been the class act of the season so far. Second in Cascais, the team headed by Jochen Schuemann (GER) and Sebastien Col (FRA), took third place here and lie second overall on the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit standings.
First MedCup win for Iberdrola With no racing today, Iberdrola (ESP) two point lead ensured they won the Marseille Trophy in the GP42 Series, also promoting themselves up to second overall on the GP42 Series overall standings behind Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP).
The bright-green machine led by skipper Laureano Wizner (ESP) has shown to be fast in light air, so those conditions in the first day of racing enable her double wins in Races 1 and 2.
Day Two’s big breeze and big seas suited Madrid-Caser Seguros (ESP), whose strong finishes of 2 - 1 – 1 then were still not quite enough to get this team, led by skipper Jose Maria van der Ploeg (ESP) and helmsman Paolo Cian (ITA), to the top of the leaderboard.
The total number of races sailed in Marseille amounts to only five, the silver liming for Peninsula Petroleum (GBR), whose broken masthead crane could not be repaired after its break in Race 3. This will leave
more races in the future available for this team, led by Gibraltar-based owner/helmsman John Bassadone and tactician Iñaki Castaner (ESP), to play catch-up to the fleet for the remainder of the series.
The Conde de Godó City of Barcelona Trophy is the next regatta of the Audi MedCup Circuit 20-25 July in the Catalan capital.
