Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team has officially appointed US-based Farr Yacht Design (FYD), to design its Volvo Open 70 for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.
Alongside this appointment is the announcement that Jason Carrington (UK) has been hired as the team’s Technical Manager. With more than 25 years of experience, FYD-designed racing yachts have won more than 40 world championships and have achieved a multitude of success at international grand prix events including the Volvo Ocean Race.

After a five-stage research and design process, the building of the yacht will start in late September. “Farr Yacht Design was selected because of its ability to tailor to our specific requirements and for its strong commitment to research and design which has been ongoing since the conclusion of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09,” said His Excellency Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).
“We anticipate being able to announce the appointment of the yacht builder early next month after finalising the selection of six tender qualifiers from throughout the Middle East, Europe and the Far East,” His Excellency added.
Shortly after announcing Ian Walker as skipper for Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team, Jason Carrington from the UK joins as Technical Manager, another knowledgeable addition to the team. Carrington is a professional offshore sailor, and is known for being one of the world’s most experienced boat-builders over the last two decades, having built five Volvo Ocean Race yachts and project-managed three campaigns. Carrington has competed in more than 30 top-level international regattas, but his first round the world experience was on Fortuna in the 1993-94 Whitbread (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race). After this taste of ocean racing, he continued his sailing career joining Silk Cut for the 1997-98 Whitbread, ASSA ABLOY in the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-02 and finally sailed with Ericsson Racing Team in the 2005-06 Volvo Ocean Race.
ADTA and Walker are also currently in the final stages of appointing the team’s other crew-members, and are committed to including a UAE national on the sailing team and another two on the shore team.
An open selection process will begin next month.

Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.
It was at 1126 hours BST on Sunday that Franck Cammas and his ten crew took victory in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland off the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. By covering the 1,802 miles in 5 days 21 hours and 26 minutes at an average speed of 12.74 knots, the French crew considerably improved on the best time over this course which had previously been in the hands of the British sailors Dee Cafari and Sam Davies since 2009.

"Our arrival in the Isle of Wight was pretty magical. We powered along the island at over twenty knots under spinnaker before tacking against the current in the Solent. On crossing the finish line off the Squadron, the exhaustion swept over us. That's how you build a team; it's important" says Jean-Luc Nélias, navigator aboard Groupama 70.
As the winner of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland tied up to the dock in the port of Cowes, the bottle of champagne was passed around the whole crew. Very much in demand, Franck Cammas had to do a steady stream of telephone interviews and after his first confrontation against a Volvo Ocean Race specialist, the skipper of Groupama 70 was ready and waiting: "Our aim in this race was to see how the work this new team, on a new boat, has been doing over the past six months would measure up to a reference like Telefonica. The battle was great and very close-fought. We really battled hard. The confrontation was worth its weight in gold with the crew forced to sail under pressure for the first time since Groupama's engagement in the Volvo.

This victory has motivated the whole team to push themselves as hard as they can. As far as the record is concerned, it's the icing on the cake" explains a happy Franck Cammas.
By taking 14 hours and 3 minutes less time than the previous Sevenstar RBI reference, Groupama 70 has confirmed the fast pace of these Volvo Ocean Race monohulls, which are capable of peak speeds in excess of 30 knots, as well as regularly sailing faster than the strength of the wind, like the multihulls that the skipper of Groupama is so familiar with. However, the greatest satisfaction for the recent winner of the Jules Verne Trophy is a human one: "We have a new team. None of my crew come from the multihull and the three Groupama trimarans. It was necessary for me to become integrated. For that there's nothing more valuable than a race to get to know each other well and gain trust. I've learnt more in six days of racing than in six months of training in Lorient during our day sails. This victory binds our crew for the future".
Next up the crew will quickly have to head back out to sea to return to the base in Lorient: "We'll have left before Telefonica arrives. We're not being prudish, but our work schedule is a busy one and every minute counts until the start of the Volvo in November 2011. It would be a mistake to underestimate our rivals" concludes Jean-Luc Nélias.

Με την απονομή των επάθλων στους νικητές, ολοκληρώθηκε στον Μόλυβο της Μυτιλήνης, η Aegean Regatta 2010, o διεθνής ιστιοπλοϊκός αγώνας που διοργανώνεται από τη Γενική Γραμματεία Αιγαίου & Νησιωτικής Πολιτικής, του Υπουργείου Υποδομών, Μεταφορών και Δικτύων και φέτος είχε πανηγυρικό χαρακτήρα, καθώς συμπλήρωσε 10 χρόνια ζωής.

Στην κατηγορία ORCi πρώτο ήταν το ΜΕLΙΤΙ IV με κυβερνήτη τον Γιώργο Ανδρεάδη που συνολικά στις τέσσερις ιστιοδρομίες είχε δύο πρώτες θέσεις, μία 2η και μία 10η. Στην ίδια κατηγορία την δεύτερη θέση πήρε το σκάφος ERYTOS II COSMOTE με κυβερνήτη τον Κώστα Μάνθο και τρίτο ήταν το INTEGRALE με κυβερνήτη τον Σωτήρη Ζαμπέτογλου.
Στην κατηγορία ORC Club πρώτο τερμάτισε το ILIANA-KAVALA BLUE CITY του Στάθη Σοφιτσή, δεύτερο ήταν το Red Rose με κυβερνήτη τον Αδάμ Τσιολακάκη και τρίτο ήταν το σκάφος AEΟLOS με κυβερνήτες τους Χαραλάμπους και Νάνο.
Τέλος στην κατηγορία IRC η γυναικεία ναυτοσύνη θριάμβευσε, καθώς πρώτο ήταν το σκάφος AELLA με κυβερνήτη την Μιράντα Παπαδοπούλου, ακολούθησε το ΑΝΑΤΕΛΟΥΣΣΑ ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΗ του Γιώργου Αυγερινού και τρίτο το WINDWALKER από την Βουλγαρία με κυβερνήτη τον Μίροσλαβ Στάνεφ.
Η αυλαία της Αegean Regatta έπεσε με έναν αγώνα όρτσα – πρίμα ανοιχτά του Μολύβου και με την απονομή των επάθλων, που έγινε από τον Υφυπουργό Υποδομών, Μεταφορών και Δικτύων, ο οποίος μεταξύ άλλων τόνισε: «Από την πρώτη κιόλας στιγμή, κατέστη ένα σημαντικό αθλητικό και πολιτιστικό γεγονός πρώτης γραμμής όχι μόνο για τα νησιά του Αιγαίου, και για το λόγο αυτό την αγκάλιασαν οι νησιωτικές κοινωνίες, οι ελληνικές αλλά και οι ξένες αθλητικές αποστολές, καθιστώντας την παράλληλα ένα διεθνές γεγονός στο χώρο του ναυταθλητισμού. Πάντως η «Aegean Regata 2010» έχει κάνει ρεκόρ συμμετοχών σε ελληνικά σκάφη και αποδεικνύει ότι είναι ο αγώνας ανοιχτής θαλάσσης, με τη μεγαλύτερη συμμετοχή στην Ελλάδα.»
Πλέον οι περισσότεροι από 800 ιστιοπλόοι των 95 σκαφών που ξεκίνησαν στην «Ρεγκάτα του Αιγαίου» του 2010, ανανέωσαν το ραντεβού τους για του χρόνου, σίγουροι ότι θα ξαναζήσουν τις ίδιες συναρπαστικές εμπειρίες, συνεχίζοντας το ταξίδι τους με δύναμη και αισιοδοξία και απολαμβάνοντας τη μοναδική ομορφιά της θάλασσας του Αιγαίου και των νησιών του.

Emirates Team New Zealand’s return to Cartagena proved something of a repeat performance as the 2009 Audi MedCup champions retained the overall Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy for the second year in a row on the same waters where they clinched the overall TP52 Series championships title last year.

The Kiwis seemed to have sailed an almost blemish free regatta, consistent across the broad wind range through the event, emerging triumphant at the dockside with a comfortable cushion on second placed Matador, but the jury subsequently disqualified them from the second race of the day for infringing Quantum Racing at the first windward mark.
The protest outcome cut the Kiwi winning margin to 10 points over Matador (ARG) but the reigning Audi MedCup title holders head to next month’s season’s finale in Sardinia with a lead of 46.5 points, just ahead of the target that the Dean Barker skippered crew had considered their realistic target.
After winning in Cascais, Portugal in May this is the New Zealanders second regatta triumph of the season with skipper Dean Barker – who skippered Bribon to win in 2008 – unbeaten in the class at this venue.
The protest decision may have smudged their copybook but on the water the Kiwis maintained their regular scores through the regatta. TeamOrigin (GBR) seemed to have the measure of them at times in the light to moderate wind conditions and flat water, but the British crew were recalled for starting too early in the final race of the day, finishing ninth. Added to their 11th in Saturday’s coastal race that left TeamOrigin, who lead early in the event, third overall.
Ben Ainslie and team will take some satisfaction not only from their first podium finish of the season and also the positive progress they are making on the season’s leaderboard, but they may look back and wonder else - other than those two ' majors' what they could have done to make good the tantalizing 1.5 points deficit they fell short of second placed Matador.
On the overall standings Quantum Racing (USA) lie second on 179.5pts, but third placed Matador and TeamOrigin are separated by just one point, on 199pts and 200pts.

The Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy, the fourth and penultimate regatta of the 2010 Audi MedCup season, gets into action today with points racing for the TP52 Series and the official Practice Race for the GP42’s.

The forecast for today’s breeze looks interesting, with a light offshore easterly wind anticipated, around six to ten knots, veering to the north of east during the afternoon.
Three windward leeward races are programmed for the TP52 schedule, with the first start around 1330hrs after the GP42 fleet take in their two practice starts.
Yesterday’s practice race for the TP52’s proved that this is a tricky race arena in light winds, but today’s offshore easterly and north easterly breeze will likely be even more difficult due to the high cliffs which the breeze will be bouncing down off on to the race arena. The winds are expected to reach up to 11-12 knots.
Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) head out on to the waters off Cartagena aware of the potential pitfalls of a light winds day here but with a measure of confidence knowing that they have an overall lead of 28.5 points on the Audi MedCup Circuit standings and that they are also the defending holders of the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy.
Paul Cayard and the crew of Artemis (SWE) who won the last Audi MedCup Circuit regatta in Barcelona won yesterday’s Practice Race.
Among the VIP guests who will be competing during the first day of racing for the TP52’s will be English couple Chris and Vicky Edwards. They are having a day to remember as guests of the Audi MedCup Circuit and Cristabella (GBR).
Chris and Vicky were the top bidders for the prize of this day at the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy regatta when it was auctioned at a glamorous charity ball in Southampton, England in June. The ball was set up by two inspiring couples in order to raise money for charities which support women with cancer and women and families who go through the trauma of stillbirth or the neonatal death of their baby. Cristabella’s boat captain Brendan Darrer is a good friend of one of the couples who set up the Make A Difference Ball, and was happy to offer this exciting prize along.
Vicky, who describes herself as a slightly nervous sailor, will race in the first race and Chris will sail on board in the second race.
“Yes, maybe I was ‘under the influence’ a little bit at the time and was pushed on to win the prize but it is well worth it because it really is something which you could not normally go out and buy, a unique experience and the causes are so worthwhile.” Vicky Edwards smiled just before their safety briefing and the dock out show in the VIP area this morning.
The GP42 Series Practice Race should start immediately after the TP52 first race of the day.

Στην κατηγορία ORCi πρώτο ήταν το ΜΕLΙΤΙ IV με κυβερνήτη τον Γιώργο Ανδρεάδη και ακολούθησαν το DRAGON του Γιάννη Μιτακίδη και το ERYTOS II Cοsmote με κυβερνήτη τον Κώστα Μάνθο.
Στην κατηγορία ORC Club πρώτευσε το ΝΑΥΚΡΑΤΟΥΣΑ με κυβερνήτη τον Μανώλη Τυφόξυλο και πίσω του ήταν το ΚΑΛΥΨΩ με τον Τάσο Κώσταλο και το RED ROSE του Αδάμ Τσιολακάκη.
Τέλος στην κατηγορία IRC την πρώτη θέση πήρε το σκάφος ΒΕΛΟΝΗ με κυβερνήτη τον Αλέξη Δημητρακόπουλο, δεύτερο ήταν το AELLA της Μιράντας Παπαδοπούλου και τρίτο το ΑΝΑΤΕΛΟΥΣΣΑ ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΗ του Γιώργου Αυγερινού.
Το δεύτερο σκέλος της Aegean Regatta ξεκινάει την πρωί της Τρίτης από την Σαμοθράκη με τερματισμό στη Μύρινα της Λήμνου. Στη συνέχεια τα ιστιοπλοϊκά σκάφη θα κατευθυνθούν στον Μόλυβο της Μυτιλήνης. Την Δευτέρα η μέρα ήταν ελεύθερη για τους περίπου 800 ιστιοπλόους, οι οποίοι στο πλαίσιο του πολιτιστικού και καλλιτεχνικού προγράμματος παρακολούθησαν μουσική βραδιά με τη συμμετοχή του Χορευτικού Συγκροτήματος Σαμοθράκης και συναυλία με παραδοσιακή και έθνικ μουσική με το συγκρότημα «ΑμανΚΙΕρως».

For the next three weeks San Francisco Bay will be the centre of the Finn world. On 27 August the Finn Gold Cup will start but this Friday, 20 August, the Finn Silver Cup for the Jorg Bruder Cup - the Junior World Championship - will get underway.
For many years the Junior Worlds was held as part of the Finn Gold Cup but increasing numbers of Juniors in Europe forced the event to be held independently and for the last few years has attracted in excess of 50 boats.
This year it will be sailed out of St Francis Yacht Club, USA with sailors from 10 countries competing for the Jorg Bruder Cup, which was first presented in 2004 by the Brazilian Olympic Committee in memory of the popular, three time Gold Cup winner. The defending champion is in fact also Brazilian. Jorge Zarif (BRA) won a close fought series last year on Lake Balaton in Hungary, and though he hasn't had as much international experience this year as some of his main rivals, is expected to be a firm favourite.
Perhaps the main favourite is the twice crowned Junior European Champion Ioannis Mitakis (GRE), who not only retained his Junior European title in Split this year but also presented himself very well in the senior fleet, finishing 12th overall. Racing commences on Friday 20 August with nine races scheduled. The medal race for top ten is scheduled for Tuesday 24 August and all races for the Silver Cup are being held from St Francis Yacht Club, before the fleet moves across the bay to Richmond for the Gold Cup, so the boats are closer to the Berkeley Circle, where the world championship racing will be held.

Μετά τη μάχη του Μαραθώνα το Σεπτέμβριο του 490 π.Χ.οι Αθηναίοι και οι Πλαταιείς με ολοήμερη πορεία έφθασαν στην Αθήνα και στο Φάληρο για να προστατεύσουν την πατρίδα τους και από τυχόν θαλάσσια εισβολή. 2.500 χρόνια αργότερα, ο Ναυτικός Όμιλος Ελληνικών Θαλασσών σε συνεργασία με το Δήμο Μαραθώνα και υπό την αιγίδα του Προέδρου της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας, διοργανώνει στις 12 Σεπτεμβρίου 2010, ιστιοπλοϊκό αγώνα προς τιμήν της υπεράνθρωπης προσπάθειας των ηρώων της ιστορίας μας που επηρέασε την ιστορία ολόκληρου του "Δυτικού" κόσμου.

Κάθε προηγούμενο ρεκόρ συμμετοχών έσπασε η Aegean Regatta 2010 που συμπληρώνει φέτος 10 χρόνια ζωής και έχει πανηγυρικό χαρακτήρα!

Μέχρι στιγμής έχουν δηλώσει ότι θα πάρουν μέρος 103 σκάφη, ένας αριθμός που θα γίνει ακόμα μεγαλύτερος, καθώς απομένουν δέκα ημέρες για τη λήξη της διορίας, το Σάββατο 21 Αυγούστου.
Η Aegean Regatta αποδεικνύει λοιπόν ότι είναι ο αγώνας ανοιχτής θαλάσσης με τη μεγαλύτερη συμμετοχή στην Ελλάδα, ενώ παράλληλα επιβεβαιώνει και τον διεθνή της χαρακτήρα, καθώς στις 103 συμμετοχές, υπάρχουν δύο σκάφη από τη Ρωσία (Bony Staf, Leader), ένα από την Ιταλία (Aria di Burrasca), ένα από την Αγγλία (Τοtemic), ένα από τη Βουλγαρία (Windwalker) κι ένα από την Κύπρο (Almira)!
Αυτή η αγάπη των ιστιοπλόων για τον αγώνα, δίνει δύναμη στους διοργανωτές της «Ρεγκάτας του Αιγαίου» αλλά και αισιοδοξία, ώστε να συνεχίσουν με τον ίδιο ενθουσιασμό και τη δεύτερη δεκαετία, προκειμένου όλοι οι ιστιοπλόοι να απολαμβάνουν τη μοναδική ομορφιά της θάλασσας του Αιγαίου και των νησιών της, αλλά και να έρχονται σε επαφή με τους κατοίκους του Αρχιπελάγους που διατηρούν αναμμένη και στα πιο μικρά νησιά, τη φλόγα του Ελληνισμού.
Η Aegean Regatta ανοίγει πανιά στις 22 Αυγούστου, με σημείο εκκίνησης τη Θάσο, ενδιάμεσους σταθμούς τη Σαμοθράκη και τη Λήμνο και τερματισμό στο Μόλυβο της Μυτιλήνης στις 28 Αυγούστου. Παράλληλα θα γίνουν πολιτιστικές και καλλιτεχνικές εκδηλώσεις με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, καθώς συμπίπτουν φέτος με τον εορταστικό χαρακτήρα του αγώνα για την συμπλήρωση των 10 ετών ζωής...
Η Aegean Regatta διοργανώνεται από τη Γενική Γραμματεία Αιγαίου & Νησιωτικής Πολιτικής, του Υπουργείου Υποδομών, Μεταφορών και Δικτύων η Επιτροπή Ανοικτής Θαλάσσης της Ελληνικής Ιστιοπλοϊκής Ομοσπονδίας και οι όμιλοι: Ν.Ο. Χίου, Α.Σ.Ι.Α.Θ. Ρόδου, Ν.Ο. Σάμου, Α.Ο. Αιγαίου και με συντονιστή Όμιλο για το 2010, τον Λ.Ο.Ι.Α.Θ. Μυτιλήνης.
