Peter Gronberg, Project Director of Team GAC Pindar, talks to istioselida.com

ISTiOSELIDA: Before we start with the sailing questions, why don’t you tell our readers a little bit about GAC. What are you guys doing?

ISTiOSELIDA: Why you have chosen sports, and particularly sailing, to advertise your company?
Peter Gronberg: Team GAC Pindar was founded by global Shipping, Marine and Logistics provider GAC, in partnership with Andrew Pindar and his sailing team "Pindar Racing". These two names have combined their strengths to create a strong brand targeting the Marine Leisure Industry, specifically yacht transport, and providing a global service supported by their respective specialist expertise.
Team GAC Pindar is not a traditional sponsorship. Rather, it is a long-term investment and full participation in and ownership of the team by both partners.

ISTiOSELIDA: Why did you choose EXSS and not any other sailing event to channel your sponsorship?
Peter Gronberg: The Extreme Sailing Series represents a fresh approach to sail racing. Using very fast 40 foot Catamarans, it attracts participants from well-known sailing teams, many of which have also been involved in Americas Cup Challenges. It has introduced the "Stadium Sailing" concept, which is highly media-friendly and offers fun and excitement for spectators who can watch the race up close. The "5th man" option is unique (at least at this level of competition) and it enables us to invite GAC staff and/or guests to experience what it is like to sail onboard during actual race conditions.

ISTiOSELIDA: What do you expect to receive back, in order to consider the sponsorship a success? So far, how do you see the media impact you receive?
Peter Gronberg: The return on our investment can be measured in many ways, as our strategy has defined inputs and a variety of expected outcomes. Media impact – though just one of the drivers of the initiative - helps to build brand recognition. That is one of the reasons that the ESS was selected as a race in which we participate, as it adds value in spectator friendliness as well as active participation and engagement.

ISTiOSELIDA: Are you results driven, concerning your sponsorship, or you rely on other issues? (because we see that Team Pindar so far is not at top podiums)
Peter Gronberg:
The Team is brand new. Even though we have a good boat and a great crew, we had less than a week training in the water before the start of the race in Oman. The standard of competition this year is very high, with some of the world’s best sailors taking part, and many highly-trained and experienced teams with prior engagement in ESS. We aim to increase and intensify our training and continue to improve the team and the boat speed as we progress.
We are also taking part in the World Match Racing Tour 2011, with two-time Match Racing World Champion and Congressional Cup winner Ian Williams as our Skipper. Our ambition is secure a third win him in the WMRT.
Of course, participating in two world tours in one year is a big challenge, but with great logistics support and planning, we believe it is possible – and the effort is sure to be very exciting. We are performance driven both on and off the water.

ISTiOSELIDA:
Are you planning to enter in any other sailing events, AC or VOR? Any other countries? Perhaps Greece :) ?
Peter Gronberg:
You never know when you will next see Team GAC Pindar on the water. Right now, we are looking to build a team for the 2012 "Sailing Arabia – The Tour" using Farr 30 sailing boats. This would be a terrific opportunity to actively involve as many GAC staff as possible in training and preparation for this great offshore race around the Arabian Peninsula. Greece also offers some fantastic sailing conditions and hosts many great races, so we certainly hope to sail there one day too.

ISTiOSELIDA:
OK then I grab this opportunity to invite you to one of the toughest regattas in Greece, Aegean Rally, this summer from 15-25 July. If you are interested, let us know, and we will be glad to organize it.
Peter Gronberg:
Thank you for your kind offer. I will consider and let you know soon...

ISTiOSELIDA:
Let's continue now with something else, has the economic instability influence your sponsorship plans?
Peter Gronberg: Again, Team GAC Pindar is not a sponsorship deal per se. Rather, it is a considered business plan to bring GAC closer to the Marine Leisure niche industry. As a Group, we have a lot to offer the sector so we see our investment as a stake in business which will be sustainable over time and independent of prevailing economic conditions.

ISTiOSELIDA: What are the budgets for a worldwide event like EXSS and Team Pindar?
Peter Gronberg: Sail racing costs money in equipment and manpower, and to run an Extreme Sailing Series campaign over a year is a significant investment. However, GAC chose to become fully engaged in sailing as there are many synergies between what the sector demands and what we can provide. Around the world, the ESS is an excellent means of team-building and tells the story of what GAC does, by being part of this great sport. The benefits are measurable in several ways, which all together justify the costs.

ISTiOSELIDA: What would you say to other companies that are reluctant to sponsor a sailing team or event?
Peter Gronberg: Every company has its own priorities and has to consider its interest and ability to sponsor a team or event. Such a decision must be in line with a well-defined and carefully considered strategy linking a brand to sail racing. From the GAC point of view, we consider sailing to be an up-and-coming media sport, and we felt that now was the right time to get involved. Our decision was intrinsically tied in with our long-term view and participation from within the company as we believe that by telling that story we are more likely to yield better business results.

ISTiOSELIDA:
Thank you Peter it was very interesting talking to you, hope to see you at the Aegean Sea sometime soon.

Peter Gronberg: Thank you for the chance to talk to your audience. Fair winds to all.
