It’s the story of the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race – now the Volvo Ocean Race - and one of the most memorable finishes of all time.
Two hundred thousand fans packed the streets that night to welcome hometown heroes – and two Kiwi boats led the pack, having battled neck and neck for over 3,500nm from Australia.
The voice? Peter Montgomery MBE. “There’d been a titanic struggle between Steinlager 2, and Fisher and Paykel New Zealand, all the way from Fremantle, round the top of New Zealand, and down the north land coast,” he says.
