It’s the story of the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race – now the Volvo Ocean Race - and one of the most memorable finishes of all time.

Two hundred thousand fans packed the streets that night to welcome hometown heroes – and two Kiwi boats led the pack, having battled neck and neck for over 3,500nm from Australia.

The voice? Peter Montgomery MBE. “There’d been a titanic struggle between Steinlager 2, and Fisher and Paykel New Zealand, all the way from Fremantle, round the top of New Zealand, and down the north land coast,” he says.

“There was an almighty confrontation going on between the two New Zealand crews, for the honour of being first into Auckland – which New Zealand boat would do it?”
